How to properly store your motorcycle for winter: Complete guide alt

Fall is here, temperatures are dropping, and riding days are becoming increasingly rare. So it's time to think about winter storage for your motorcycle. Proper storage will not only protect your investment, but also ensure that your motorcycle is in perfect condition when spring arrives.

Check out our comprehensive step-by-step guide to storing your motorcycle safely.

Clean your motorcycle thoroughly

First and foremost, give your motorcycle a good wash to remove dust, dirt, insects, and road residue. These can damage the paintwork or cause corrosion if left for months.

Start by cleaning the surface with mild soap and a non-abrasive sponge to avoid scratches. Once clean, dry it thoroughly with a microfiber towel to prevent water spots. Finally, apply a suitable wax or protectant, if possible, to preserve the paint's shine and durability.

Fill up and add a gas stabilizer

A partially empty tank promotes condensation, which can lead to rust inside.

To prevent this, start by filling the tank to capacity to limit condensation in the tank. Then add a good quality fuel stabilizer to preserve the fuel during the period of inactivity. Next, run the engine for a few minutes to allow the product to distribute evenly throughout the system.

Change oil and filter

Even if you haven't reached your maintenance interval, it is strongly recommended that you change the oil before winter. Why? Used oil contains acids and contaminants that can damage internal components during long months of inactivity.

Disconnect or maintain your battery

Dead batteries are one of the most common problems in the spring. You have two options:

Disconnect the battery and store it indoors in a dry place at room temperature to prevent it from discharging or becoming damaged.

Alternatively, you can leave it in place and use a smart charger (or “tender”) to maintain its charge throughout the winter.

Raise or rotate the tires

Tires can develop flat spots if the motorcycle is parked in the same place for too long. Ideally, the motorcycle should be suspended using a center stand or paddock stand to prevent tire deformation during storage. If this is not possible, be sure to inflate the tires to the recommended pressure and remember to rotate the wheels from time to time to distribute wear evenly

Cover it properly

Invest in a breathable cover designed for storage. Avoid plastic tarps that trap moisture. Never cover your motorcycle while it is still wet, as trapped moisture can cause corrosion or mold. Before putting on the cover, also make sure it doesn't touch dirty or greasy surfaces directly, to avoid dirtying the motorcycle or damaging the cover.

Avoid damp and poorly ventilated areas

Ideally, store your motorcycle in a closed, dry garage with a stable temperature to protect it from weather variations, humidity, and dust. Avoid placing it near sources of moisture such as washing machines, water heaters, or porous foundation walls, as prolonged exposure to moisture can promote rust and damage mechanical and electrical components.

A word about security

If you need to store your motorcycle in an accessible or less secure location, be sure to lock it with a sturdy lock, preferably attached to a solid anchor point. To enhance security, it is also recommended that you use an alarm system or monitor it with a camera to deter theft attempts.
